Photographing the birds
When I’m in an old Beech forest and I hear the mystery call of the Black Woodpecker, my adrenalin level goes up. What a beautiful sound! And then searching for a nesting hole.
I have spent hours at a nesting site, from dawn to dusk in my mobile hide in the cold. But it was worth every minute.
When breeding the birds take turns. The female lays 3-5 eggs and only once a year. Breeding is 12 - 14 days and the chicks stay in the nest for 3 - 4 weeks before they fletch.
When the female was on the nest, the male came after 1,5 - 2 hours to take over. But when the male was on the nest, the female came after 2 - 2,5 hours. Yeah, she was taking her time.
And when the eggs hatched, the birds went off feeding the chicks. Every 1.5 - 2 hours the male or female were some 10 seconds on the tree.
So in 14 hours of daylight I had some 10 times of only 10 seconds to photograph them. Yeah one must be patience....
De vogels fotograferen
Als ik in een oud beukenbos loop en ik hoor het geluid van de Zwarte Specht, gaat mijn adrenaline niveau meteen omhoog. Wat een prachtig geluid! En dan maar zoeken naar een nesthol.
Ik heb uren doorgebracht bij zo'n nest, van zonsopkomst tot zonsondergang in mijn schuiltentje, maar dat was elke minuut waard.
Als Zwarte Spechten broeden wisselen beide vogels elkaar af. Het vrouwtje legt 1 keer per jaar 3 - 5 eieren en deze worden in 12 - 14 dagen uitgebroed en de jongen blijven 3 - 4 weken in het nest voordat ze uitvliegen.
Toen het vrouwtje aan het broeden was, kwam het mannetje elke 1,5 - 2 uur om haar af te wisselen.
Maar toen het mannetje op de eieren zat, kwam het vrouwtje pas na 2 - 2,5 uur, ze nam duidelijk haar tijd.
En als de eieren uitgekomen zijn, begint het voeren van de kuikens.
Elke 1,5 - 2 uur komen het vrouwtje of het mannetje slechts 10 seconden bij de boom.
In 14 uur had ik dus zo'n 10 keer een mogelijkheid van 10 seconden om ze vast te leggen .
Tja, geduld is belangrijk...

Male takes off
Every 1,5 - 2 hours the birds are coming back with food and then they take off again.
Mannetje vliegt weg
Elke 1,5 - 2 uur komen de vogels terug met voedsel en daarna vliegen ze weer weg.

Het mannetje heeft een rood petje op zijn kop en vrouwtjes slechts een rode stip.
When a bird is near the nest, it makes a contact call first, before it flies to the nesting hole.
Als een ouder vogel bij het nest komt, roept hij eerst voordat hij naar de nestholte vliegt.
When the male is not fast enough, the hungry chick reaches out for him.
Als het mannetje niet snel genoeg voert, strekt het jong zich uit om er toch bij te kunnen.
Landing
First landing on a tree near the nest, then make a contact call.
Everything save? Then it flies to the tree with the nesting hole and climbs to the hole itself.
Landen
Eerst landen in een boom vlak in de buurt en de contactroep laten klinken.
Als alles veilig is, vliegt de vogel naar de boom met de nestholte en klimt dan vervolgens naar het hol zelf.
Feeding Wood Ants
The male is feeding a chick wood ants, the main food source.
Houtmieren voeren
Het mannetje voert een jong houtmieren, het voornaamste voedsel.
The chicks fletch
For 3 - 4 weeks the chicks stay in the nesting hole.
After that the parents try to get the chicks to fly to them by sitting on a tree near them with wood ants.
De kuikens vliegen uit
Gedurende 3-4 weken blijven de jongen in het hol.
Daarna proberen de ouders de vogels het nest uit te lokken, door vlak in de buurt te landen met houtmieren.
Getting new food
The Woodpecker flies off to get new food for its chicks.
Nieuw Voedsel halen
De Specht vliegt weg van het nest op zoek naar nieuw voedsel.
Changing of the guards
The female is leaving its nest when the male arrives. The eggs will never be left alone. On this image the male on the tree is bending a little bit to the left, so the female can fly out easier.
Wisseling van de wacht
Het vrouwtje verlaat de nestholte als het mannetje terug komt. De eieren worden nooit alleen gelaten. Op deze foto is goed te zien dat het mannetje op de boom iets opzij buigt, zodat het vrouwtje makkelijker weg kan vliegen.
